OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

WJelcome to (^ustlium

In his book, 'The Outermost House", Henry Beston described his feelings
about our town when he wrote: "Outermost cliff and solitary dune, the plane
of the ocean and the far bright rims of the world; meadow land, and marsh,
and ancient moor; this is Eastham; this is the Outer Cape". So you too can
stand on the "solitary dune", and gaze across to "the far bright rims of the
world". Those of us who call Eastham our home, welcome you, our visitors,
and hope that you too can enjoy Eastham as we do and as Henry Beston did.

For your information about Eastham. It was settled by a handful of
people from Plymouth in 1644 and incorporated in 1651. At this time Eastham
included the areas now covered by the present towns of Orleans, Brewster,
Harwich, parts of Chatham and Wellfleet. From the solitary dunes on the
ocean side to the flat bayside ... a distance of three miles across ... it covers
an area of a little more than 14 miles. It has a population of 3,059, and like
all towns on the Cape it has a town meeting form of government, with
elected Selectmen (three) at the helm. Tax rate last year was $35.10 per
thousand; a grand list of $52,036,249.00, total assessment, which produced in
revenue to the Town, a total of $1,826,472.34.

Recommended: Before going
out in a boat, do what this
man is doing . . . check your
gas and your tides among the
items mentioned below. Low
tides in the marshes are ex-
tremely treacherous ... to be
caught out there without gas
when the tide recedes may be
most uncomfortable. It is a
long way back pulling your
boat thru the mud of the
marsh.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Small Boat Suggetions

Before going out in a small boat of any
kind . . . CHECK THE WEATHER.

The law requires that a small boat regard-
less of size, when driven by a motor, includ-
ing an outboard motor, must have aboard
a life preserver or a buoyant cushion for
each person (including children) on board.
There is a fine of $100 for both owner and
occupant.

About licenses, parking stickers

You must obtain a sticker for your car to
go on town owned beach parking areas. It
will save you money. You must have a
sticker on your car to go to the town dump.

Selectmen’s clerk. You must have a permit
from the police department for beach parties.
While at the Town Hall for the above,

be easier to find you. There are new regu-
lations about loose running dogs. Find out
about them at the Town Hall.

EASTHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY

Our Public Library has one of the loveliest
locations in town. It is located on Samoset
Road just west of the Windmill and overlooking
Long Pond. There is a convenient off-street
parking area behind the library.

The original building was built in 1897 by the
Village Improvement Society (which explains
the inscription over the library door) and was
given to the town in 1903. During 1976 the
Trustees published a short history of the
library, written and researched by Helen
Schwind. Copies of this history are still available
at the library.

Librarian Jane Eldridge will be happy to help
you make a selection from among the current
books or from our excellent Cape Cod collec-
tion. Genealogists will find a wealth of material
here, and children, of course, get special atten-
tion. Check the local papers for story hour
times and Mimsy puppet shows.

All are welcome to use the library facilities.

SURFING

Although Eastham's Coast Guard beach is on
occasion, a surfer's paradise, there are times
when surfers, like this one pictured here, must
wait and wait for the proper time and the
proper wave to come rollin' in.

EASTHAM

Gateway to the National Seashore is BEAUTIFUL any time but especially so
OFF SEASON. May and June, again in September and October — Yes,
come to EASTHAM before or after the crowds.

See nature in all its beauty — travel the highways and byways when
there is room to breathe.

Yes, — for the birders, for the bicyclists, the photographers, the
nature lovers — that is the time to come to EASTHAM. For the golfers,
the courses are not crowded, for the tennis players, they can play without
waiting hours for a court. And best of all, in most places OFF SEASON
RATES prevail.

TAXPAYERS ASSOCIATION

Eastham is beautiful — let's keep it that way!

A GIFT TO EASTHAM

To own property and live in a community is a
great privilege. Those of us who own a second
home here in Eastham and spend as much spare
time as possible in the area feel doubly for-
tunate. We feel responsibility too, and wish to
contribute to the protection and promotion of
the Town we both cherish and admire. We do
this thru the Eastham Non-Resident Taxpayers
Association, Inc., now numbering 900. If you
are a non-resident taxpayer, are eligible to join
and attend our meetings July 9 and August 27
in 1977, 8:00 p.m. in the Town Hall. The Town
Officials are present and we use this channel
to make our views known. We want all of yog
to be part of this group helping Eastham to
retain and enhance its natural beauty and charm
and to preserve the National Seashore. Dues
are $2.00 yearly. Contact any officer; Pres. Dick

THE MILLER EXPOUNDING

The wheels go round and round and the flour
comes out here, explains Miller James Owens to
interested visitors. This windmill, one of the most
photographed objects in this area, is considered
to be the oldest workable grist mill on Cape Cod.
Tradition says it was built in Plymouth in 1793,
dismantled and brought across the bay on a log raft
to Truro, and a few years Jater, probably in
1797, taken apart and brought over the road to Eastham,
where it was set up on its present location
on the Green.

SALT POND, EASTHAM, 1977

It looks as though it might be a bridge across
the pond. Or perhaps it's a seagull rookery or
feeding station for migrating birds. Actually, it
isn't any of those, but rather a hopeful effort to
produce more shellfish in Eastham. What we are
referring to is the string of floats, rafts and
what-have-you that lies in Salt Pond.

Hanging below the styrofoam floats that you
see from the shore are trays containing a variety
of shellfish ranging from oysters to blue mussels,
quahogs (hard shell clams), scallops and steamers
(soft shell clams). They all have one thing in
common — they are all babies, growing as fast
as they can in our "nursery". The reason that
they are there is because the growing conditions
in Salt Pond, things like food, salinity, tempera-
ture, shelter from storms, are near perfect for
them and they take full advantage of the season.

Most of the rafts contain young quahogs. In
the spring, they are delivered to the pond from
a hatchery when they are about as big as a pea,
age four months. Up to one hundred thousand
are given a home in sandboxes hanging from the
rafts. By the following spring they are over an
inch in length and ready to be transplanted to the
rest of the marsh. In a short time they will reach
a legal size of two inches and be ready for
your table.

And so it is with the other beasts living under
the rafts. Some are brought to us from hatcher-
ies, others are bestowed on us by Mother Nature.
The nursery protects from predators the young
in the early stages of their life when they are
most vulnerable, and provides us with one more
step toward the future of our shellfish resources.

For you to take advantage of today's resources,
first stop at the Town Hall and purchase a shell-
fish license. Then fetch your scratcher, pail and
family helpers and dig up some supper. Salt
Pond is open on Sundays only as listed in the
schedule below. The rest of the town is open
all the time except as posted. You'll be glad
you did.

In spite of the growing price of shellfish seed,
Eastham has managed to keep their license fees
at a minimum: for non-commercial she! Ifisher-

men: $3 for a tax payer; $5 for a family renting
in Eastham; and for non-resident, non-renting
visitors $10. These fees are for an entire family
and permit the taking of one level 10-quart pail
of any and all kinds of shellfish per week all year.
(Excepting scallops, for which special regulations
are written each year.)

Non-commercial shellfishing on Sundays only.
On Sundays not listed below, the Salt Pond is
open for non-commercial shellfishing all day.
Areas in Salt Pond open only as posted at Town
Landing. All other areas in Eastham open at all
times between sunrise and sunset unless other-
wise posted. All sedge grass areas closed to all
shellfishing.

Times listed here Daylight Saving Time. Limit:
one LEVEL 10-quart pail per family per week.

“Do-Nothing-Days”

Under the watchful eyes of the lifeguards (in
white helmets) swimmers challenge the surf at
Coast Guard Beach, one of the favorite swimming
areas in the National Seashore.

Eastham Visitor's
Activity Index

AREA ORIENTATION: Soon after you arrive,
check in at the Eastham Town Hall on Rt. Six in
the center of town. Here information is avail-
able about fishing licenses, beach parking per-
mits, fire permits for beach cookouts, boat
mooring permits at the Eastham Marina at Rock
Harbor. Get acquainted with town officials,
including the police and fire departments. Leave
your name and address so that you can be
reached in an emergency.

On Rt. Six, going towards Orleans is the town
operated Information Booth, staffed with quali-
fied personnel who can help with information
about available cottage space, where to eat,
location of gift shops, etc.

The Visitor Center of the National Seashore
Park is a must and is located just Off Rt. Six a
few hundred yards north of the Town Hall.

SWMMING, SURFING AND SUN BATHING
(for those great "do-nothing" days)

Eastham is rich in sources for such activities
. . . the ocean, the bay and the fresh water
ponds. Those who prefer surfing and the robust
challenge of the sea with its colder water, can
enjoy the Coast Guard and the Nauset Light
beaches, both within the jurisdiction of the
National Seashore with its life guards and bath-
houses. Each beach has a "surfing" section
reserved. For warmer water and family type
beach activities, the five bay beaches offer safe
bathing and where you can walk out several
hundred feet without getting your head wet.
First Encounter and Cook's Brook beaches have
restroom facilities. Parking stickers can be
obtained at the Town Hall. Fresh water bathing
can be enjoyed at several town ponds, featured
by Wiley Park on Great Pond, off Herring Brook
Road (see map) where a bathhouse and Picnic
Area are located. Swimming and Life Saving
classes under competent instructors are also held
here. (Check story on Rec. Activities) Herring
Pond, off the road by the same name, is also a
popular spot.

FISHING AND OTHER SPORTS FACILITIES:

Tennis courts are available on a first come first
served basis at the Eastham Elementary school

grounds on Schoolhouse Road, and at the Nauset
Regional High School grounds off Cable Road,
North Eastham, and at the town courts in
Orleans, near Eldridge Park. A teen age recrea-
tional program under trained leadership is held
daily at the Nauset High grounds. (Check sched-
ule of Recreational Activities program.)

The area abounds in golf courses, both public
and private. Check the Yellow Pages for details.
Some of the nearby courses . . . with a few
miles radius are: Brewster, Bass River, Dennis
Pines, Harwich Municipal, Blue Rock in South
Yarmouth, Harwich Port Country Club, Highland
Golf Course in Truro, Eastward Ho in Chatham.

Surf casting and fresh water fishing abounds in
the area, and charter fishing boats leave daily
from Rock Harbor, Provincetown and Wellfleet
... all within a few minutes ride from Eastham.
On Sundays, those with licenses can dig for
quahaugs (see Sunday schedules on page 23) and
the Nauset Marsh, Town Cove or the Bay Side
can be explored for shellfish at low tide.

The Nauset Rod and Gun Club of North Eastham
has facilities for those interested i-n rifle, or

skeet shooting.

Eastham hosts an active Little League Baseball
program centered around the attractive field
behind the Town Hall. Cape Cod's famous
NCAA sponsored Baseball League featuring out-
standing college players is represented locally
by the Orleans Cardinals, and large crowds watch
exciting baseball games, evenings, at Eldridge

Bicycle Trails, designed to keep you off the
heavily travelled highways, are beginning to be
built so that, eventually the entire Cape will
be connected. At the present, a well built Bike
trail will take you from the Visitor's Center to
the Coast Guard Beach area, thru several miles
of field and forest. A more complete trail thru
Eastham is described on another page.

INDIAN SUMMER: We invite you to visit us in
the summer, but many, many people prefer

The Red Cedar Swamp Trail approaching the
Penniman House, in the Fort Hill area of the
National Seashore. In the distance, still unseen,
the thunderous beat of the Atlantic surf may
be heard ... as it pounds the fragile dunes of
the Outer Beach.

Eastham in the late fall, when we think the Cape
is at its best. Little or no traffic, uncrowded
beaches, ample restaurant and gift shop facilities
. . . and best of all, the weather is ideal . . and
THE PRICE IS RIGHT. Most cottage colonies
and motels feature reduced rates. Check with
them before leaving the Cape in the summer.
Plan a return visit . . . when everything, includ-
ing the PRICE IS RIGHT.

Along the bicycle trail from the Visitor's Center
to the Coast Guard Beach area. . . This magni-
ficent hiking and biking trail meanders from
the Visitor's Center to the ocean, passing thru
the Cedar Banks and on over the Great Marsh,
where in the proper season the blue heron and
flying wedges of Canadian geese vie with the
terns and gulls for vantage points.

A stroll through Eastham's old burying
grounds can be richly rewarding to historian or
casual visitor, especially if they bear one of the
old names to be found on the ancient stones,
for some were among the first settlers in the
new world.

As you come into Eastham after leaving the
rotary at the end of the Mid-Cape highway,
keep your eyes open for the little cemetery on
the right, about half-way to the town hall. It was
in this vicinity near the Cove about 1644 that
the first settlers built their homes, their 20 foot
square meeting, house with a thatched roof and
portholes for guns, and buried their dead in
tne churchyard. A second meeting house
replaced the first in 16/6, and it was enlarged
in 1700.

Samuel Treat, the town's first minister and
ordained in 1672, was the Son of Governor
Robert Treat of Connecticut. He died in a
snow storm in 1716 at the age of 69, and was
carried to his grave in this cemetery on the
shoulders of his Indian friends.' Somewhere in
this small cemetery are the unmarked graves
of three Mayflower passengers. Constance
Hopkins (1605-1677) who married Nicholas
Snow (Eastham town clerk from 1646 to 1662)
in 1627 and had eleven children. Giles Hopkins
(1607-1690) brother of Constance, who married
Catherine Wheldon in 1639 and had seven
children. Lieut. Joseph Rogers (1608-1678; who
married Hannah (?) and had seven children.
Over the centuries the slate stones have split,
the epitaphs have weathered away, but still
to be read are the graves of Samuel Brown,
Captain Samuel Freeman, Deacon Edward
Knowles, Thomas Mulford, David Doane,
Thomas Lewes, Samuel Hedge, Ebenezer Hard-
ing, John Freeman, John knowles, Richard
Sparrow, Jonathan Sparrow, Daniel Cole, Han-
nah Snow, Thankful Higgins, along with wives
and children in some instances. There are
memorial stones to John Doane and Ralph
Smith. The legible stones in this cemetery
date from 1706 to 1757.

The Third meeting house was built in 1720
on Bridge Road near the center of town. Or
this meeting house Heman Doane wrote:

1. The old South meeting-house, timeworn

and gray

that stood fronting East to the "King's

Highway,

that goeth to Billingsgate," so runs the
phrase,

in quaint old records of olden days.

2. All gone! that old Congregational band,
Save here and there one, to the Spirit
land;

And their mouldering forms are sleeping
near

Where the old church stood for many
a year.

Here in the adjoining burying ground, are
to be found the stones of the Rev. Edward
Cheever (and his wife Martha) who served
from 1751 to his death in 1794, as well as
deacons, sea captains, soldiers, and public
servants. Here are to be found the later
descendants of those named in the first church-
yard, as well as the names Atwood, Cobb,
NicKerson, Myrick, Remick, Pepper, Mayo,
PacKard, Clark, Lombard, Crosby, Shaw, and
others dimmed by time. The stones in this
cemetery date from 1754 to 1881.

The Third meeting house was replaced by
the fourth and last Congregational church on
the main highway (now Route 6) just South of
the railroad crossing. This last meeting house
was sold about 18b4, and only the burying
ground, now known as the Congregational and
boidiers Cemetry remains, with still a few
unsold lots. Here is to be found the stone of
the Rev. Pnilander Shaw who was ordained in
1/95 and served 42 years until 1838. Also are
to be found me names or the later descendants
of those in tne two older burying grounds, and
in addition the later names of Paine, Chase,
Brackett, Hopkins, Gill, Cummings, and others.
Here the stones date from about 1830 to the
present.

With the passing of the Congregational church
about 1864, the Methodist church was growing,
lor it was first organized about 1821. A larger
Methodist church was built in 1851 and this
was destroyed by tire in 1920. I he present
Evergreen cemetery grew up around the
Metnodist church, and is now uie town's prin-
cipal cemetery, here will be found names dat-
ing from abuut 1821 to the present, again
Containing many or the old names and more
and more new, and later ones.

THE CROSBY TAVERN

This beautiful and historic Cape situated on Bridge Road near the old cemetery has
a long and colorful history.

It began its existence about 1720 when it was built as a parsonage for the nearby
Congregational Church. The church is no longer there but the graveyard contains
the remains of many of the early settlers of Eastham including the Reverend and
Mrs. Cheever. He was called to serve the parish in 1750 and lived with his family
in the parsonage. After his death the widow Cheever sold the house to a well known
coastal trader named Thomas Crosby. Under his ownership it was turned into a
tavern and became a regular stop for passing stagecoaches.

During the war of 1812 the old public house played a prominent role — for it was
under this roof that three British officers and twenty men of H.M.S. Spencer, which
was patrolling Cape Cod Bay, were kept prisoners one night after they had been
tricked by Yankee Captain Mayo.

Capt. Mayo was impressed to pilot the schooner which was armed with brass four-
pounders and the usual equipment of war. One day during a storm Mayo directed
the helmsman to a bad anchorage where the Eastham townspeople turned out to
watch the fun. Mayo advised his Captain to go below to allay any suspicions of the
citizens and gave him a gimlet to tap a keg of rum located below. When Captain
and crew became suitably drunk he went ashore and reported his capture. The local
militia marched the prisoners to Crosby Tavern where they made the best of a
bad night.

After Crosby died in 1825 his wife remarried and sold the tavern to Captain Joshua
Nickerson who made it into a home. Nickerson's descendants lived there until
recently when it was sold to Earl E. Welch, the present owner.

Nineteen years ago a common interest
in art brought eight women together to
form the group known as the Nauset
Painters. They painted together, met for
business meetings and began exhibiting
their paintings in outdoor shows. Mem-
bership is limited in order for the artists
to meet monthly in each other's homes.
The paintings exhibited in the early out-
door shows were hung on clothesline
strung from tree to tree, and later snow
fencing and wire was used as a sturdier
backing for the art work. The art back-
grounds of the Nauset Painters are as
varied as their styles and media. The
purpose of the Nauset Painters is to
further the interest in art among them-
selves and in the community. They have
given scholarships to Nauset area stu-
dents who are majoring in art. They have
also added to the collection of fine arts
books at the Snow Library in Orleans.
Other artists may exhibit in three of the
six shows which gives Sunday painters,
summer as well as local artists, profes-
sional and amateur, an opportunity to
sell and be seen by the hundreds of
people who attend the shows. People
come back year after year to Brewster,
Orleans and Eastham to see the latest

work of their favorite artist and enjoy
the informal park atmosphere of the
Orleans Village Green or Eastham His-
torical Schoolhouse Museum grounds.

The Captain Penniman House, home of one of
Eastham's whaling captains. It is easy to under-
stand why Edward Penniman, a well traveled
whaler, selected this spot for his home. The
Fort Hill area, where this house stands, has one
of the most beautiful views on the Cape. Here
again one might visualize Champlain's encoun-
ter with the Nauset Indians, large farms cover-
ing the rolling fields, and the salt works along
the edge of the bluff, producing the much
needed salt during the Revolution and the war
of 1812. At this time only the exterior has been
restored, and may be viewed along the self-
guided Fort Hill Trail. This one and a half mile
trail guides you thru many years of history,
and is combined with the Red Maple Swamp
which tells the story of of nature in all its
stages.

CHURCH SERVICES

(More than three hundred years — in 1672 to be exact — Samuel Treat became the town's first minister,
and thundered his message of hell-fire and damnation. As a historian of the times declared: "his
voice was. so loud when speaking it could be heard at a great distance from the meeting house,
even i n the midst of the winds that blowed over the plains of Nauset".)

Perhaps not in the thunderous tones of Mr. Treat, yet the church leaders of the present preach
their religious philosophies with the same zeal. The following churches are within easy travelling

EASTHAM WEATHER

(as compiled by Cape Cod Chamber of Comm.)

We in Eastham are fortunate regarding our
weather. Situated between the Atlantic Ocean
and Cape Cod Bay, the stabilizing effect of both
bodies of water tend to keep Eastham cooler
in the summer and warmer in the winter than
the mainland, or for that matter most of the
Upper Cape.

Of shipwrecks on Nauset before estab-
lishment of the life saving service there
is no complete record. One study,
covering the seventeen years ending in
I860, showed lost at Nauset fourteen
brigs, twelve schooners, six barks and
three ships. Another study, of wrecks
where loss of life and value of vessels
was recorded, for the years 1837-60,
showed thirty-one vessels, fifty-six lives
and property — ships and cargoes —
worth just under a million dollars!

Eastham Historical Facts

researched by Fred Jewel.

SALT MAKING

Eastham at one time had as many as
fifty salt-making plants. The salt-making
business reached its peak about 1830
when western and foreign salt started
coming in and the price of pine lumber
from Maine, used for making vats, in-
creased prohibitively. Dr. Palfrey at the
Bicentennial in Barnstable, in 1839
spoke of voyaging 20 miles, south of
Provincetown, along a shore which
seemed built of salt vats. At that time
it took more than 300 gallons of sea
water to make a bushel of salt, and
boiled down, was worth $8.00. Solar
evaporation of salt was patented in 1799
by a Dennis man.

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS

Indians raised quantities of corn in
Eastham on what was called the Plains
of Nauset, and white settlers produced
it for export. From one to three thousand
bushels were sold from the town in
some years. Single farms raised as much
as five hundred bushels of grain, and a
yield of 800 bushels was credited to one
farm. As late as 1920 there were 1700
acres with hardly a vegetable mould,
that had once produced corn and wheat.
A couple of decades after the landing
of the Pilgrims, people in Plymouth
seriously considered transplanting the
whole Plymouth Colony to the flat and
sea girt town of Eastham, largely because
of the fertile acres.

EASTHAM BIKEWAYS

At the present time there is a direct route that joins the Orleans bikeway system
with Eastham routes and leads to the Eastham-Wellfleet town line. This route avoids
heavily travelled Route 6 through Eastham by turning off at the Orleans-Eastham
traffic circle, heading west for a few hundred yards, and then north along Bridge
Road. It continues along Herring Brook Road, Massasoit Road behind the Wellfleet
Drive-In, into Wellfleet.

This route is quite scenic, crossing the bridge at Boatmeadow Creek, offering
a view across the marsh to Cape Cod Bay, toward the fishing grounds. The route
continues along the marsh, with a vista toward First Encounter Beach, then passing
through a wooded area along lightly travelled roads, finally reaching the Wellfleet
sanctuary of the Audubon Society before joining Route 6 in Wellfleet.

A circular trip around Eastham is possible by turning off Massasoit Road, crossing
Route 6 in North Eastham at the light, continuing along Bracket Road and Cable
Road to the Atlantic Ocean beaches.
